Carl Reinecke
(1824 – 1910)
Although technically born in Denmark, the long-lived German composer Carl Reinecke was a pianist whose first teacher was his father. Beginning his musical career as a soloist and accompanist, Reinecke joined the staff of the
Cologne
Music
School in 1851 when he was 27, where he gained experience as a conductor and choral director. In 1860 Reinecke was appointed as director of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in
Leipzig , where he also served as professor of piano and composition at the Conservatorium until 1895. Highly esteemed by musicians and composers of his day, Reinecke’s compositions included 4 operas, 2 symphonies, 4 piano concertos, and many chamber works. Today he is remembered primarily for his contributions to the flute literature which include the Sonata “Undine”, the “Ballade”Op288, and the “Concerto in D Op.283”
