Abbietta zingara from "Il Trovatore"Composer: VerdiPublisher: Adams Magnificent MusicInstrumentation: Flute and HarpAn Italian Romantic composer, mainly of opera, he was one of the most influential composers of the 19th century. Il Trovatore comes from Verdi's middle period, and its English title is The Troubadour. It is an opera in four acts, based on the play El Trovador by Antonio Garcia Gutierrez. This aria is sung by Ferdinand in the first act, an officer in Count di Luna's army, where he sings about a gypsy who had once bewitched the little brother of the count. She had made the child ill, and had been burnt as a witch because of this. As she was dying, she commanded her daughter Azucena to avenge her death.
