The Bird Song presents serious classical flutists and flute lovers with a rare opportunity to laugh at themselves. We are often challenged with technically demanding excerpts that require us to imitate birds, and this piece uses quotes from the symphonic literature (or perhaps "misquote" is a more accurate term) to relentlessly drive that point home. The rapid tonguing passages are inspired by the flute solo from Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals. Every flutist will recognize the infamous "flute lick" from Prokofieff's Peter and the Wolf. Also included are bits of Ravel's Daphnis and Chloe and a quirky distortion of the Prelude to an Afternoon of a Faun by Debussy.
