Weihnachtliche Kammermusik (Christmastide Chamber Music) for 2 Violins and basso continuoOriginal Trios by J.S. Bach, G. Ph. Telemann, Gr. J. Werner, G. B. Pergolesi, J. G. GoldbergFlutists will need to slightly change some passages to another octave in order to play them properly. There is an abundant selection of Christmas music for choir or solo voice, but it is often correspondingly difficult to find instrumental music which is suitable for use at Christmas. Here the practice of extracting single movements from a complete sonata - not otherwise to be greeted without reservations - has an intrinsic justification. The later Baroque period, in particular, has given us a large number of especially intimate pastoral movements, mostly in the nature of a Siciliano, which seem ideally suited to serve as introductory instrumental pieces for music at Christmas. The following volume collects together a selection of such movements for two violins and continuo - the typical trio-sonata combination which is still generally available today. The top part in the movements by Telemann was originally conceived for flute, but in the spirit of the Baroque, which left a freedom of choice as to which instruments were used, it goes without saying that it may also be played on the violin. Conversely, the uppermost part in most of the other movements can be played on the flute or some other solo instrument.
