The Church Flutist; A book of traditional hymn tunes with flute obbligato
Arranged by Jane Bent for flute obbligato
Includes score showing the original hymn tune and flute obbligato

Description:

The Church flutist has been designed around 50 hymn tunes which are the basis for over a hundred hymns and carols beloved by Christians of all denominations.  The obbligatos have been written with an eye to versatility.  Suggested uses include: (1) solo flute with solo singer; (2) two flutes, (3) flute (or flutes) with choir, (4) Flute (or flutes) with choir and congregation, (5) two flutes and organ or piano, (6) flute, singer and organ or piano, (7) flute, choir, congregation and organ.  Other combinations can be easily envisionded.  In some of the above-mentioned, it might be advisable to play the obbligato octava if the flute is at risk of being covered.

In a work of this nature an obvious problem presents itself with regard to key signatures and harmonizations.  It is, of course, impossible to write obbligatos that would fit universally with all harmonications; and as far as key is concerned, the range of the flute must be considered.  The obbligatos of THe Church Flutist have been designed to "fit into" traditional harmonizations (e.g. the hymnals of the Episcopal Church, Lutheran Church in America, and the United Methodist Church) and above all to enhance rather than detract from the hymn tune and text.  Because many of the hymn tunes included will be found transposed in certain hymnals, chord symbols have been included for the convenience of organists and pianists.  Also, fo rhte convenience of students, time signatures have been added to those hymns which lack them in many hymnals.

Three indexes- bby hymn tune, hymn, and topic have been included.  All numbers are those of hymn tunes, one setting of which has been chosen as the title of the tune.
