Eighteen Duos composed by Bela BartokEdited by Gerhard Braun and Laszlo Csupor for two FlutesIncludes SCORE ONLY!"Bartok, who had always taken a lively interest in the polyphonic techniques of two-part writing, was only too happy to oblige, and he sent one miniature after another for selection (for the School of Violin Playing). This was the origin of the 44 Duos, whose thematic material derives almost exclusively from Hungarian, Slovakian, Romanian, Ukranian, Serbian, and Arabic folk music. Although the origin of the 44 Duos undoubtedly lay in a didactic purpose, it is clear that the composer had in mind a work which would not so much help the aspiring violinist to surmount technical difficulties as to give him practice in the kind of musical partnership required by chamber music. There is a similar purpose behind the present edition, in which 18 of the 44 Duos have been selected and arranged for two flutes. A further didactic goal is inherent in this publication: it is designed to serve as an introduction to the most important elements of the folk music of Hungary and the neighbouring regions in general, and to Barot's musical world in particular. It is intended that familiarity with the freely declaimed "peasant melodies" which consistently form the principal part, with Bartok's contrapuntal working and not least with his characteristic use of dissonance derived largely from polytonality, should help the young musician to become acquainted and at home with the language of the contemporary music, the exigencies of secure intonation and the discupline of musical partnerships." -PrefaceContents: Maypole DanceMidsummer Night Song Slovakian Song (1) Hungarian Song (1) Play Song Ruthenian Song Cradle Song Pillow Dance Hungarian March (1) A Fairy Tale Comic Song Hungarian Song (2) Teasing Song Counting Song Limping Dance New Year's Song (3) New Year's Song (4) Serbian Dance
