Eternal Father: The Navy Hymn by John B. Dyke
Arranged for Flute and Piano by Wayne Fritchie

This is a musical benediction that long has had an appeal to seafaring men and women, particularly in the US Navy, Royal Navies of the British Commonwealth and French naval tradition.  The words were written by an English clergyman in 1860, and it was adapted to music by another English clergyman the following year.  In 1879, the Rear Admiral Charles Jackson Train was the lieutenant commander in charge of the Midshipman Choir at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis.  He inaugurated the present practice of concluding each Sunday's Divine Services at the Academy with the singing of the first verse of this hymn.  It is also often used at funerals for personnel who either served in or were associated with the Navy.  It was played at both President Franklin Roosevelt's (former Secretary of the Navy) and President John F Kennedy's (PT boat commander) funerals.  The melody stays simple, and would be a nice addition to a Memorial Day or patriotic program.
