The Coventry Carol was sung by the women as part of The Pateant of the Shearman and Tailors play, which was the nineteenth play in a medieval cyle of Corpus Christi Mystery Plays performed in York and Coventry in the 15th century.  This fantasy for flute choir could be imagined to be the music for such a mystery play.  This dissonant blocked chords symbolize tyranny, the dreamy opening melody hints at a denial of reality, and the subsequent intensifying variations of the theme all have decisive points of action with them.  A poignant Sephardic melody Durme, durme (Sleep, sleep my darling son) is interwoven with the Coventry tune.  This work was commissioned by the Colorado Flute Orchestra under the direction of Nancy L Spidel, and was premiered on December 17, 2005.  There are optional handbell and percussion parts included with the piece.
