A leading German composer of the late Romantic and early modern eras, he is known for his operas and tone poems, as well as being a prominent conductor throughout Germany and Austria.  Der Rosenkavalier, or the Knight of the Rose, is a comic opera in three acts, and is loosely adapted from the novel Les amours du chevalier de Faublas by Louvet de Courvrai and Moliere's comedy Monsieur de Pourceaugnac.  This trio is between The Marschallin, Sophie and Octavian, which Octavian hesitates between the two women (Sophie, who he loves, and the Marschallin, his older lover).  The Marschallin releases Octavian, encouraging him to follow his heart and love Sophie.
