La LornaFlute part, Harp scoreComposer: Rabens-MoorePublisher: Julietta Music PublicationsInstrumentation: Flute and HarpThe inspiration for this work comes from Lynda Edward's research and reporting on the mythology created by homeless children in the US and Mexico. The titles of the pieces represent the two maternal figures in this folklore. The first is the Blue Lady, an angel who lives in the ocean and is powerless to help protect the children unless they know her secret name. The second maternal figure is Black Mary or La Llororona who marks the children for death. The expressive realm of this piece explores a broader background of the La Llorona myth, a poignant tale of being discarded. After exploring a frantic, dissonant world that searches but cannot find it, it ends with the obsessive repetition of a few chords that rock gently as a cradle. The sounds of unstable, weak mourning fade into nonexistence.
