Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme (The Would-Be Gentleman)A Suite of Incidental Music for Woodwind QuintetFor Flute, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb, Horn in F, BassoonComposed by Frantisek BartosPublished by McCoy's Horn LibraryPARTS ONLY
Preface: Frantisek Bartos composed this charming suite of incidental music for a production of Moliere's celebrated satire on the nouveau rich, Le Bourgois Gentilhomme ("The Would-be Gentleman"). The situation in the play wherein M. Jourdain tries to master the arts of fencing, dancing, etc., offers plenty of opportunity for music, as witness the famous Richard Strauss score, or for that matter the one which Lully composed for the original 1670 production at Versailles. Frantisek Bartos was one of the most gifted of the post-Janecek school of Czech composers. In this suite he offers a ceremonious Intrada, a whimsical Carillon, a piquant Bouree, a delightfully pompous Minuet, a lively Gigue in the best modern Bach manner, and a humorous Marcia alla Turca.
