The Mexican Hat Dance is the national dance of Mexico. It is known in its native country as Jarabe Tapatio. Jarabe means syrup or a medicinal but sweet alcoholic drink. Tapatio means something from Guadalajara. The music was composed by Jesus Gonzalez Rubio, a professor of music in Guadalajara, sometime in the 19th century. The dance was first choreographed by Felipa Lopez in the early 20th century for a government-sponsored fiesta celebrating the end of the Mexican revoluation.
