Oracle was written in 1999 for James Zellers, Instructor of Flute at the University of Georgia, Athens, GA. Dr. Zellers has performed regularly with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and he has recently become the principal flutist in the Florida Orchestra, Tampa, Florida.
In ancient times, an oracle was a priest or priestess through whom it was believed that the gods spoke. It was also the place where these divinely-inspired prophesies of the future were passed down to mortals. The title is a reflection of the serious mood of the work and is intended to represent the intensity and increasing animation that a prophet might have in presenting his/her message. Oracle is cast in two main parts. A slow, dramatic opening passage presents ideas which are developed and lead into the faster concluding section.
