Sonata by Johann Ernst Bach (1722-1777)For Flute and PianoEdited by Frank Michael
J.E. Bach was a son of J.S. Bach's cousin Johann Bernhard Bach. He attended, among other institutions, the Thomasschule in Leipzig, studied law, and "for many a year was fondly received" at the home of his foster uncle. He was active in Eisenach as a circuit attorney and as an organist, and was appointed Kapellmeister to the court chapel in Weimar in 1756. Among other works, he composed a passion oratorio, numerous works for piano and for organ, and six sonatas for piano and violin. With this issue, Frank Michael succeeded in publishing a small sensation. The title of the manuscript, which had remained hidden until then, also referred to this play as a trio, even if suspected behind the present form with obbligato harpsichord a transcription.
