Sonata Op121 composed by Malcolm ArnoldWritten for Flute and PianoIncludes score and parts"The are so many works for flute which are solely vehicles for instrumental viruosity that I have attempted to write a piece where the musical element is more to the fore. Although this is a virtuoso work with a particular virtuoso in mind, as are all my solo pieces, it endeavours to be as interesting musically as I can possibly make it. I hope I have succeeded in this without being dull. Over the past several years I have tended to write in free fantasy form, with the exception of my Seventh Symphony and Second String Quartet. I have chosen the sonata form for this piece because there is such a lot of music in free forms for the flute. It is a sonata in the sense of a violin sonata, or a piano sonata. It is in three movements, and was completed in January 1977. The sonata is dedicated to James Galway." - Malcolm Arnold Contents: Movements: I. AllegroII. AndantinoIII. Maestoso con molto ritmico
