The Sonata describes a musical and personal journey. The titles of the four movements, though not relating to specific events in [the composer's] life, do suggest stages in the journey. "Mountains and Valleys" describes emotional highs and lows, as well as musical ones. "Free Flight" describes a certain lyrical and exhilarating but ultimately irresponsible break from relationships and some of the problems encountered as a result. "Alone" can be said to describe the consequences of breaking away from the past, yet there is a yearning for it as well. As a sign of this, the main theme from "Mountains and Valleys" makes a brief appearance near the end. "New Beginnings" is about determination to persevere, and also about the joy of starting fresh, of wiping the slate clean and celebrating life anew.-from the composer's notes for the Movement Titles.
