Sonata for Flute and Piano (1992) by William AverittI. ModeratoII. TombeauIII. Caccia con BrioIV. Song and DanceThe first movement, Moderato, is a sonata structure modeled directly on the opening movement of Beethoven's Op109 piano sonata. The second movement, Tombeau, is a slow movement whose opening, perhaps, recalls the elegantly ornamented music of the French baroque and some of the transverse flute's earliest repertoire. Caccia con Brio is a scherzo named for the composer's wildly active fox terrier. The concluding Song and Dance is actually two movements: a blues connected without pause to a ragtime.
