An English Renaissance composer, he was also a singer and lutenist.  He is also best known for the melancholy mood of his music.   The first tune, The Earl of Essex his Galliard, appeared in print botha s a lute song and as a consort piece arranged by Thomas Morley.  Lachrimae Pavan, also known as Flow, my teares, attained the popularity of a folksong during the composer's own lifetime.  In this arrangment for flute and guitar, it offers the variations of the blind campanologist and flutist Jan Jacob van Eyck.  The King of Denmark's Galliard exists in three arrangements--as a solo piece for lute under the title The Battle Galliard, as a piece for viol concert and as an arrangement for the "broken consort" (a combination of instruments from different families.
