Three Songs by Charles IvesArranged by James BoatmanFor C flute or Alto flute with PianoPublished by Alry Publications
Songs included: In Summer Fields (Feldeinsamkeit), From "Night of Frost in May", Two Little Flowers (and dedicated to them). These songs follow Ives' progression from Western European traditions to a more American style of composition. In Summer Fields includes a technique mirroring Gounod's casting of a lyric melody ("Ave Maria") over Bach's C major Prelude (Well Tempered Clavier, Book I)with its ongoing keyboard arpeggiation. His Americanism begins showing itself in Night of Frost in May with its ragtime-like syncopations in the piano while retaining a romantic melody on top. Two Little Flowers is the most "Ives-like" in this collection with its mixed meter consisting of a melody in 4/4 over a 7/8 accompaniment which--after some surprising harmonies--resolves in a true display of sentimentality.
