In Vain, O Cruel OneFly Away O My Sighs
Renaissance composer Carlo Gesualdo is best known for his vocal madrigals. His favorite subjects were pain, sorrow, and longing. Typical of his style are the surprisingly modern-sounding harmonies and the alteration of textures - imitative and then chordal.
Since this was originally vocal music, the flute ensemble must make a special effort to play expressively and with great variety of tonal color. These madrigals will be most effective when played with two or theree flutes on each part. Please note that Part 5 may be played by bass, alto, or C flutes, or any combination. Optional parts are included.
