Khachaturian (1903-1978) continued the colorful, folk-inspired style of such nineteenth century Russian composers as Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky into the twentieth century. He added to it the influence of his Armenian heritage. The vivid tunes of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgian songs and dances were impressions that determined his musical thinking and style.
In 1941 he composed incidental music for the play Masquerade bu the Russian playright and poet Mikhail Lermontov. Three years later Khachaturian arranged five movements from the incidental music into what is known as the Masquerade Suite. The first movement from the Suite, the Waltz, is also the most popular. Its surging rhythms and dark emotional undercurrents evoke passion and elegance.
