Winter Ayres Collection arranged by Kathryn Cater and Sandy Duffy Norman for Flute and Harp
Contents:Inis Oirr/Aran Boat SongHush My Babe/Away in the MangerMonth of January/When the Snow and Frost Are All OverThe Winter Ayres Collection is arranged flute and harp music that is appropriate any time beautiful soothing music is required. "Inis Oir" and "Aran Boat Song" are songs from the Irish Isles of the same name, both written here in the key of G major and e minor. "Inis Oir" is a sweeping melody in 3/4 that creates a poignant mood of this isolated limestone island and "Aran Boat Song" is in 6/8, a rocking melody that evokes the feeling of sailing the rolling Irish seas in search of home. There are counter-melodies and harmonies in the flute part. The dotted quarter note tremolos in the harp part are a continuous tremolo, with an emphasis placed on beats one and four.
"Hush My Babe/Away in a Manger" is a soothing lullaby. There are two tunes in this medley for "Away in a Manger" - one is well-known as "Flow Gently Sweet Afton." It starts in the key of E Major and moves to A Major where the flute plays in the upper register.
"The Month of January" is a slow Irish air in D major played in contrast above the icy 16th notes of the harp. "When the Snow and Frost are All Over" is a dark modal jig that evokes the feeling of its title. It ends with a whimsical Celtic flute in an improvisational style.
