Both familiar tunes of this title are utilized in this arrangement. The one called Luther's Cradle Hymn (thought to have been written by James R Murray in 1887) is expressed in the introduction, but the first fully realized melody is the one most often known at the Scottish song Flow Gently, Sweet Afton. Both tunes are explored quite amply here with creative harmonies throughout, and descants given on occasion by the upper and inner flutes.
