About twenty years after James Mongomery wrote his 1816 Christmas Eve poem entitled Nativity, Henry Smart penned this beautiful and often performed tune to highlight those inviting words. Smart, a London organist and composer, carved his notch in the history of English church music by being one of the first to harmonize melodies. Scored for a minimum of 6C flutes, this can be expanded or enhanced by the use of piccolo, alto, and bass flutes, and well as adding divisi parts on flutes 2,3,and 4. There is also an option of using 3 bell ringers using handchimes or handbells (or xylophone, piano, or vibraphone for a section in flutes 3,4, and 5.
