The Swan of Tuonela is an 1885 tone poem by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius.  It is the third part of Op22 Lemminkainen (Four Legends), tales from the Kalevala epid of Finnish mythology.

Sibelius scored this tone poem for a small orchestra.  The music paints an image of a mystical swan swimming around Tuonela, the island of the dead.  Lemminkainen, the hero of the epic, has been tasked with the killing the sacred swan, but on the way he is shot with a poisoned arrow and dies.  In the next part of the epic he is restored to life.

Although this work consists of no more than a hundred bars, it is one of the most poetic and imaginative compositions by Sibelius.
