2 Canzone a 4 from Opus 1 (Two Canzone from Op1) - La Casata and La Mendozza - by Gasparo PietraugruaFor ensemble of recorders S.A.T.B or modern flutes (Piccolo/C Flute [8va], 2 C Flutes and Alto Flute in G)Includes score and parts
The canzone of Pietragrua are skillfully written, playing off against each other imitative sections and rather bracing homophonic sections. The composer shows more than sufficient contrapuntal skill, writes idiomatically in instrumental style, and shows some harmonic imagination, particularly in "La Mendozza" which, let it be said, derives some of its interest from its apparent inability to decide which mode it is in.
As with most canzone, intrumentation is flexible. This edition is suitable for an ensemble of recorders S.A.T.B. (or S.A.A.B.). Renaissance recorders are the most appropriate, but those with limited ranges will have some difficulty dealing with a few high notes. Baroque recorders, though anachronistic, will handle the ranges more easily. The canzone may also be played on S.A.T.B. renaissance flutes, though do not with complete ease. Any combination of string instruments that will fir that parts will do nicely.
