In the late 1980s, producer Warren Schatz presented a series of theme records with the Hampton String Quartet. One of these was What If Mozart Wrote "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," in which each Christmas carol on the album was arranged in the style of a different classical composer. Taking inspiration from this recording, Donald Sosin took a selection of the most famous Christmas carols and reworked them in the styles of the great composers.
