Performance Notes by Katherine Borst Jones:
Calliope Capers was written by Ladd McIntosh for Katherine Borst Jones and the OSU Flute Troupe after hearing them at the awards convocation where he received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from The Ohio State University School of Music in 2007. It is one of five movements from the Suite for Flute Ensemble. The piece is an upbeat, positive, fun to play piece appropriate for high school to adult flute choirs.
Calliope has two meanings. We are most familiar with the musical instrument often used on riverboats or in a circus. It is a keyboard instrument powered by compressed air or steam, which cannot vary its loudness. A calliope in classical mythology is the muse of heroic poetry. According to some sources, chief of all muses, she is believed to be the muse for the Homer's Iliad and Odyssey.
