About the Composition:
It seems a pity that the great composers of the Classical era never had the opportunity to write in the Ragtime style, assuming of course that they would have wanted to. Nevertheless, considering the indications of a wonderful sense of humor manifested in the compositions of such masters as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Josef Haydn, one could hope that they might approved of this marriage between two disparate school, or at least refrain from public approbation or legal action. "The Classical Rag" was originally composed for string quartet and was published under the title "The String Quartet Rag". It was premiered at Allerton House in Allerton Park, Monticello, Illinois on June 10, 1989 as part of the Illinois Council of Orchestras/University of Illinois Community Orchestra Symposium. It has been published by Southern Music Company in editions for string orchestra, string quartet, violin quartet, and brass quintet (under the original title), and for flute choir and now woodwind quintet under the title "The Classical Rag".
It is intended to be a lighthearted piece, ideally suited for inclusion in programs of a humorous nature. The astute listener will recognize the presence of themes borrowed from Mozart's serenade popularly known as Eine Kliene Nachtmusik, and Haydn's Symphony in G major, No. 94, the so called "Surprise" Symphony.
