El Pifano (Retrati de Manet) by Mario LavistaFor Solo PiccoloDuration: 6:00El pifano was inspired by the French artist Edouard Manet's painting with the same title from 1866. During the late 1970's, Lavista embarked on a series of solo flute pieces in which he used a different member of the flute family in each work: Cabto del alba (C flute, 1797), Lamento a la muerte de Raul Lavista (bass flute, 1981), and Notturno (alto flute, 1982). In all of these pieces, Lavista explores each instrument to the fullest through extended techniques and changes of tone color. He wrote El pifano in 1989 with this same idea in mind. El pifano was a commission by the Venezuelan flutist Luis Julio Toro and Lavista dedicated the piece both to him and to Mexican flutist Guillermo Portillo.
El pifano consists of three large sections - A B A' - and is approximately 6 minutes in duration.
