These Entr'actes from Carmen are charming miniatures found in the midst of the grand opera Carmen by Georges Bizet. They come between the first three acts and are completely independent pieces. Adapting them to the woodwind quintet was not much trouble because the original woodwind parts from the full score contain almost all of the melodic lines.
The snare drum part occurs only in Entr'acte I. It would be a nice addition to your program if you can find a volunteer to play it. It is not difficult.
The English Horn part is here as Bizet wrote it. Oboists are generally glad to add variety to a program by playing English horn. In this edition, a part is provided for alto saxophone to substitute for the French Horn, and the English horn notes are incorporated in the optional part. Another auxiliary part is provided so that a bass clarinet may substitute for the bassoon.
Formally, the arrangement quotes the two pieces played in order. These parts are very similar to the original parts. The soft dynamics require excellent control from all players, and the famous flute solo of the second Entr'acte is a welcome challenge that is quoted here with very few changes. The melodies of the other instruments provide a warm accompaniment.

Optional bass clarinet, alto sax, and snare drum parts are included.
