Exercises for the Flute on Unfamiliar Sequences by Louis Moyse
Book 2 of 3

The goal of these exercises is to bring to flutists unfamiliar sequences - unusual successions of notes or intervals - to break from traditional patterns of scales and arpeggios which for centuries were the basic materials used by composers to write music, and by instrumentalists to master their technique.

We are so used to these traditional patterns that when we have to deal with an unexpected combination of notes, a mental block may be experienced. This leads to an immediate tension or stiffness in the fingers. When one breaks with the familiar ways of writing music, the ears have to be trained to listen to different sounds, and the eyes require the training to sightread.
