Fantasia on "Down Ampney"By Elliot WeisgarberFor flute and organPublished by Elliot Weirgarber Associates, Ltd.Includes score and partDuration: 9-10 minutes
Notes: This small work has its origins in a visit made by the composer to the Goucestershire village of Down Ampney where the late composer Ralph Vaughan Williams was born in 1872. When RVW made the contribution of several magnificent hymns to the 1906 edition of the English Hymnal he indexed this one particular tune in honour of his birthplace. The "Fantasia" set in five sections with a Coda, follows the structure of the hymn. In Section 5 the hymn appears as RVW wrote it and is used with the gracious permission of Oxford University Press. The Fantasia is a simple response to a lovely place huanted by all the time which has flowed about it.
