Performance Notes:
One of the most beloved and familiar American Christmas Spirituals (dating most likely from the early 1800's) has found itself a new venue in the flute choir repertoire. The birth of a Savoir who would set all men free was certainly an event to sing about with great energy, and from what better place than the top of a mountain?
Beginning by highlighting a mournful solo introduction of the melody with stylistic chromatic chordal progressions underneath, this arrangement then launches into a wonderfully jazzy realization of the popular melody. In most cases, the "chorus" beneath each verse is the calm between various lively versions of the theme, as the traditional harmonies progress with occasional surprises. The third flute has a delightful solo before letter "D" that should be taken with great liberty in the American Spiritual style.
Careful execution of rhythms, accents, and tempo changes are vital to an exicitng performance of this piece. While working perfectly well with 6 C flutes, this arrangement is greatly enhanced by the addition of alto and bass flutes as indicated plus seventh and eighth C flutes on the lower optional division notes in parts three and four.
