Preface: At a time when it is increasingly important for young people to be able to investigate all the possibilities of a life in music, An Introduction to Music Publishing performs a real service to music education. The articles in the book introduce the reader to various aspects of a subject that not only is interesting in its own right but also is not touched upon in the usual music curriculum. Coming at a moment when the paths to career opportunities are becoming more and more crowded, this book will open up new perspectives to young musicians. The chapters are by authorities in their respective fields. They are written in an accessible manner that is down-to-earth without ever being condescending, and range from esthetic-stylistic discussion - for example, Aaron Copland's essay A Modernist Defends Modern Music - to practical matters as Fritz Oberdoerffer's Editing the Composer's Manuscript or Copyright Information by Charles Gary. Several, such as The Economic Nature of Music Publishing by Leonard Feist or Recording Contemporary Music by Teresa Sterne, raise questions that I have personally encountered in the classroom - questions for which I have previously did not have an answer.
