Program Notes: ONE FOR FOUR is a one-movement piece for four C flutes. This one movement is in three parts: the first and last sections take advantage of the flute's ability to execute fast scale passages, while the middle section shows off its lyrical qualities. The melodic material for the outer sections is based on the diminished scale (a series of alternating half and whole steps). The tritone and perfect fourth, both prominent intervals in the diminished scale, are the main harmonic intervals. The middle section, however, is based on the interval of the perfect fifth, featuring motion in parallel fifths creating tension against a stationary fifth. The short "tremolo" section marks the beginning of a bridge to the last part by introducing harmonic material from the opening of the piece.
