About these Power Exercises...
This book is guaranteed to improve your playing. If you can play even two chapters of this book with evenness, accuracy, and reasonable speed, you will have already put yourself in an elite group of flutists.
Power Exercises is structured for a specific goal. This is a book for finger techinique, not tonguing, tone, etc. though articulations may be practiced once the slurring is perfected. Slurring is important as it exposes technical flaws. Each exercise should be played slowly at first, then gradually faster and always evenly. Smoothness is of the utmost importance. Fast playing is only great if it is smooth and even.
The twenty-first century flutist needs technical proficiency throughout a range of forty notes. This range encompasses low B to highest D. Most etude books and study guides ignore the uppermost notes and most flutists have poor technique in this area. This book requires that the performer play every exercise throughout the entire flute range. Play the difficult passages slowly until you can play them more quickly. Remember to slur so you can hear any inaccuracies of fingering.
Anyone playing this book will notice an imporvement in their playing by the time they complete the first chapter, Chromatics. I consider this chapter to truly be powerful because it seems to smooth out unevenness in the fingers more than any other exercise. When practicing keep the arms up and away from the body to facilitate breathing. Keep the flute horizontal to the body and keep the wrists relaxed. Arch the fingers slightly and keep them close to the keys. Never slap the keys. Press them lightly without hitting.
This book has seven chapters, and each chapter has seven sections. Ther performer has the option of using the book by playing a different chapter each day of the week, or by playing the same number from every chapter as a daily routine. In either case the result will be better playing technique.
Good luck, the power is in your hands!
