Regnava nel silenzio from "Lucia di Lammermoor"Composer: DonizettiPublisher: Adams Magnificent MusicInstrumentation: Flute and Harp
An Italian composer of the 19th century, he was one of the leading composers of bel canto opera. Lucia di Lammermoor is a tragic opera in three acts, and based loosely on Sir Walter Scott's historical novel The Bride of Lammermoor. It is tale of the emotionally fragile Lucia Ashton, who is caught in a fued between her own family and the Ravenswoods. This famous aria is in the first act, when Lucia tells her maid Alisa that she has seen the ghost of a girl killed on the very same spot by a jealous Ravenswood ancestor. The flute part offers a cadenza, along with other ornamention that a coloratura soprano would have used to demonstrate their technical ability in the bel canto style.
