America's #1 flute specialty house since 1983.
The opening movement is set in the Dorian mode, which has a minor flavor tempered by the brightness of the raised sixth scale degree. The darker Phyrigian mode colors the second movement, beginning with a lone flute presenting the melody which later returns accompanied contrapuntally. The "Tarantella" features the Locrian mode, one almost never used because of the tritone interval between tonic and lowered dominant. This movement tests the virtuosity of the flutists with its rippling runs that become ever more flashy as the movement progresses, leading to the cascading scales that close the work.
