Performer notes:
The Story of the Woodwind Family was written for the Woodwind Quintet of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra to be performed on its educational programs. The purpose of the work is to introduce the young audience to the instruments of the woodwind quintet. Each instrument portrays a character in the story. Barney, Clarence, Abby, Felicia, and Freddy are introduced one at a time. With verbal and musical hints, the children should be able to match the instrument with its alter ego.
Each player has an opportunity to discuss his/her instrument. These discussions should be kept short so that the flow of the story in maintained. The discussions should be kept short so that the flow of the story is maintained. The discussions may even be omitted, but if they are, the sections of music at letter G (bassoon reed demo) and letter Ee (stopped horn demo) should be deleted, since this music is part of the instrument discussions and not an actual part of the story.
