Beethoven's late variations on folk songs, published here for the first time in an unadulterated version, did not draw attention either from experts or amateurs until a short while ago. The rather less than modest reputation of these variations has probably been due to the fact that in an alternative setting a flute accompanies the piano; listeners nowadays are too accustomed to the opposite state of affairs to accept what is normally a solo instrument in a subordinate role.  Beethoven's publisher wanted just that setting, however, and he obviously expected good returns from it, the tradition of home music making being what it was.  But that tradition is long dead.  Furthermore, the flute part often seems like an extraneous element, a subsequent addition rather than part of the original conception. It may enrich the musical substance now and again, but we still absolutely agree wtih Uhde when he described these variations as sheer piano music first and foremost. For informal music-making, especially for the study of chamber music, however, the flute part will continue to be of value.
