The words to America the Beautiful were written by Katharine Lee Bates, a professor of English literature at Wellesley College, after an inspiring trip to the of Pikes Peaks, Colorado in 1893. The poem first appeared in print on July 4, 1895, in the weekly journal The Congregationalist. It was not always sung to the same tune, and was eventually matched to Materna, composed by Samuel Ward in 1882. Samuel Ward was an American composer and organist, who Bates had never met. This arrangement is dedicated to the memory of a friend, who died in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
