Franck's last piano work, the Prelude, Aria et Final, dates from 1887 and was published in 1888 by Hamelle. This magnificent work has never attained the place in the repertoire other Franck compositions have secured–perhaps because of its great length, perhaps because of the incredible demands it makes on the pianist, or perhaps simply because is ends softly. In any event, the middle section contains some of the most melodious music ever to come from Franck's pen. Hopefully this excerpt of the Aria, transcribed for a variety of resources, may give more players and listeners a chance to appreciate its beauty. – Charles Callahan
