Ashokan Farewell by Jay Ungar
Scored for flute and piano
Ashokan Farewell was composed in 1982 by American folk musician Jay Ungar. For many years it served as a goodnight or farewell waltz at the annual Ashokan Fiddle & Dance Camps run by Ungar and his wife Molly Mason. Jay Ungar gave this piece the name ‘Ashokan Farewell’ based on the Ashokan Field Campus of SUNY New Paltz (now the Ashokan Center) in Upstate New York. This work was used by film director Ken Burns as the theme for his documentary The Civil War.
