Benjamin Godard won a reputation as a composer of lightweight, yet immensely popular piano “salon” music, of which Au Matin is a prime example. He did write some more substantial orchestral and operatic works, though they are rarely performed.
A performance of this piece should reflect the general lyrical style – a good deal of dynamic range and a flexible approach to tempi.
