Aubade for Flute, Oboe and Clarinet by Paul DeWailly

Edited by Matt Johnston

Score and parts

Dedication: For Georges Barrere

Program notes:  It would be an understatement to say that the repertoire for this unique combination of wind instruments is rather limited.  Most players would likely only be able to name one or two pieces, with the Divertimento by Malcolm Arnold standing out as the mot familiar.  This Aubade by Paul de Wailly, first published in 1906, is dedicated to flutist Georges Barrere.  A student of Cesar Franck, de Wailly composed in a traditional, romantic manner, similar to his teacher, and generally shunned the contemporary techniques (the impressionism of Debussy and Ravel, and the avant-garde of Stravinsky) coming into style at the time. — Matt Johnston
