Grieg composed this piece for piano in the summer of 1884 in honor of the Bicentennary celebration of Danish literary figure Ludvig Holberg (1684-1754). Although Grieg used the baroque forms from the times of Holberg, the harmonic style is that of the ninetheenth century.
Flutes 2 and 6 should have the B extension, and Flutes 2 and 4 should use piccolos if possible for a unified color in the trio of the Praelude movement. The bass flute part is optional but preferred.
