Big Sky for Alto Flute (or C Flute) and Piano by Phyllis Louke
A programmatic work in four movements available for alto flute or C flute and piano. Both versions are included. Wonderful for showing off the alto!
I. Big Sky
II. Riding The Range
III. Cry of The Eagle
IV. Whitewater on the Blackfoot
“Big Sky” celebrates the beauty and grandeur of Montana in a movement reminiscent of Aaron Copland, with open chords and large intervals in the melody. “Riding the Range” is written in alternating 6/8 and 3/4 time signatures, and depicts the loping rhythm of a cowboy and his horse on a cattle drive. “Cry of the Eagle” opens with harmonies, timbral trills, and pitch bends played freely to simulate the cry of an eagle. “Whitewater on the Blackfoot” details the excitement of river rafting on the Blackfoot River.
