About this piece, Scott Watson has offered the following 'Program Note':
This work, a rollicking Latin-jazz dance movement, was written for my flutist daughter, Abby. Abby is a Disney “freak”, so I thought it fitting to use as generative material two quotes from iconic Disney melodies: “When You Wish Upon a Star” and “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes'.
Fragments of both melodies are treated to a host of contemporary compositional manipulations throughout (i.e. tone-rows, sets, cantus firmi, etc.), never actually appearing in their overt forms. Nonetheless, these tune fragments are enough a part of the DNA of the piece that the listener will sense their presence at some point… “like a bolt out of the blue!”
This composer's music is actually quite chromatic, yet conventional notation is used throughout. Accidentals carry through each bar. The central 'free section' is given somewhat spatially; both players can be quite 'free'. It's an exciting and showy piece, expertly made, like all this unique composer's output. Careful attention to articulation markings and dynamic levels will be rewarded with audience approval.
