Children's Suite (c.1984), by Graham Powning
Movements: Pop Goes the Quartet, Oranges and Vodka, The Teddy Bears Freak Out.
Scored for piccolo, 3 C flutes; or for piccolo, 2 C flutes, alto flute (or bass flute)
“When I was a student, there was no ensemble material that was “enjoyable” or obviously written by a wind player. “Children's Suite” was written for a group of students (about 15 years old) at the New South Wales Conservatorium High School. This is a highly selective high school, and these arrangements served as demonstration pieces for the flute family at concerts for less privileged school children. The nursery rhymes were immediately recognizble and gave these children something to 'latch onto'. The harmonization is 'interesting', to say the least.” – Graham Powning
A lively quartet in three movements: Pop Goes the Quartet, Oranges and Vodka, The Teddy Bears' Freak-Out. Over the years, it has been requested that a more “age-appropriate” version be made available, and we are happy to provide this edition upon request. The titles in this edition are simply the original nursery rhymes: Pop Goes the Weasel, Oranges and Lemons, The Teddy Bears' Picnic.
